Psychophysical psychotherapy is based on the idea that the body and mind are inseparably connected, with each continuously influencing the other. It places particular emphasis on an individual's embodied ways of reacting and relating to others and their environment. This experiental approach can be applied within various psychotherapy orientations.

In the therapeutic relationship, the focus is on strengthening the mind-body connection, as well as recognising and regulating emotions and arousal states. Alongside verbal dialogue, attention is given to nonverbal interaction and bodily experiences. Exploring one's patterns of response and practicing self regulation can also involve doing various body based exercises.

A core principle of psychophysical psychotherapy is that each of us develops a repertoire of embodied ways of reacting throughout life, especially during early development. This "bodily repertoire" is shaped by factors such as the environment in which we grow up, cultural influences, life events, significant relationships, and current life circumstances.

One's existing bodily repertoire may be functional in some situations but less so in others. A general goal of psychophysical work is to enrich and increase the flexibility of this repertoire. As a result, you may learn new and more functional ways of responding and acting in your life.

BODILY APPROACH IN PSYCHOTHERAPY

A psychophysical approach is always somewhat present in my client work. We can place a stronger emphasis on bodily aspects in therapy if this approach feels natural or interesting to you.
